The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has asked the public to ignore claims by Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko that he was preparing to contest for the flagbearership position of the party in the 2024 presidential elections.
According to Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, “nothing is further from the truth” because “at the moment, together with the leadership of the party, I am focused entirely on throwing my fullest support behind His Excellency John Dramani Mahama in the presidential election petition that is being litigated in the Supreme Court”.
The NDC national chairman describes the election petition as one which “is of the utmost importance that I spare no effort whatsoever in doing whatever is necessary to prosecute the petition to its logical conclusion”.
Mr. Otchere-Darko, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), had claimed that although Chairman Ofosu Ampofo seems to be supporting his flagbearer, Mr. Mahama in the Supreme Court petition, he knows that the real contest is the 2024 flagbearership race.
To Gabby, the election petition is just a political gimmick to prepare for the 2024 contest and everyone in the NDC is aware of this.
“Politics. You must love it. The NDC Chairman, Ofosu Ampofo, is fully involved in court efforts to secure a rerun of last month’s presidential race between John Mahama and Jean Mensa (sorry, Akufo-Addo). Yet, who says he is not also preparing keenly to contest John Mahama as the party’s presidential candidate for 2024?”
The political strategist continued: “They both know the score. That they are likely to face each other pretty soon and pretending the Supreme Court is where the real battle is”.
Currently, John Dramani Mahama is in the Supreme Court seeking for a rerun of the election because to him, no candidate who contested for the 2020 Presidential race won the election.
But in a sharp rebuttal, Ofosu-Ampofo in a statement released on Sunday, 17th January, 2020 said “I have no desire to challenge His Excellency John Dramani Mahama either today or tomorrow for the flagbearership of our great party”.
He insisted that “the times we are in demand that we deploy all our energies in order to ensure that the rigging that characterized the last presidential election is exposed and God-willing, the opportunity is granted to the voters once again to choose the right and proper person to steer the affairs of our beloved country, Ghana”.
He called on “the teeming supporters and sympathizers of the great NDC to treat the effusions of the unruly cousin of the President with contempt. There is no truth whatsoever in it”.
